Thought this would be an easy beginner hike because it's mostly flat. The sand, poison oak, tide, and shifting rocks are no joke. Super cool area though.

I have backpacked this magnificent part of CA 7 times beginning as a 14 yo in 1971. Back then pinch points were a problem only at above average high tides. Most of them had alt routes up and over. No permits, no bear boxes. Just show up and hike. We brought basics and foraged shellfish and berries. There was a secret hot spring way up Shipman Creek. May still be. When you camp on the beach next to running creeks and the constant waves on stones you start to hear things. I always heard angels singing. Last time was 1990 with my fiancé. We saw 5 people over one week. Pro-tip: wear short gaiters to keep sand and stone out of your kicks. Thanks for taking me back! This is a sacred place.

Hunting is allowed on this trail, and it's actively deer season right now. The deer zone is B4 if you ever want to check hunting season dates to plan trips around if you want. People do hunt this trail and king range in general.

It’s the most depressing trail I have ever done. So many rotten stinky sea animal corpses on the beach, dead huge seals, even whale. It’s spooky and unsettling. I will never hike that trail again.

The pinch points stressed me out so bad for no reason. The video doesn’t even show the cliffs. It’s pretty much vertical cliffs to one side and the ocean on the other. You’d probably be completely fine at high tide but it feels like you won’t be.
