This should have been avoided. Tourist pay a daily €4 fee for every night they stay in the city called Tourist Tax. This tax is used to support the reconstruction, maintenance, and development of the city.

The saddest thing I saw was a girl commented on a video here about the incident begging anyone if they knew the whereabouts of her parents, turns out her parents were the two Canadians that perished :(

Portuguese here, apparently the company that ran this thought the new maintenance contract was too expensive and even though workers complained, nothing was ever done. Well now they have to pay the families of the victims a large sum, hopefully next time they won't think maintenance is too expensive.

Was the only thing holding it there the cable? There SHOULD have been multiple emergency ways for that vehicle to stop, regardless if they were there and broke or not there at all this was so preventable 💔

These are so old, the first was built in the 1820s and initially only did 5/6 trips daily max. Now it’s constant, clearly this should have been predicted.
