@the.drillmaster: This is a friend of mine, @bigdanstyle, when he was active duty calling cadence for 500 Marines on their way to chow. Your command voice meters greatly. Even if if your commands "only need to be heard" three feet away, the command voice is SO IMPORTANT to signal to the formation that you know what you're doing. If you don't sound like that, the formation won't look like that. Distance doesn't matter. Yes, everyone in the formation needs to be able to hear and understand your commands, but more importantly, your command voice has a big influence on everyone in the formation, especially, and even those in ear shot. We are NEVER to call quiet commands just because our formation is standing right next to us (color guard, for instance). There are subdued commands, but that's ceremonial drill.
