@germanwithsammy: obviously there are more immigrants in germany than ever before but it’s still a much more homogenous country than the US #learngerman #german #deutsch #deutschland #lernedeutsch
that’s the same with every language. english speakers are incredibly accomodating when it comes to foreigners cause we hear it every day. on the other hand if you go to anywhere outside of big cities in europe maybe they hear their someone speaking their language as a second language once a month. i noticed this so much when i went to brittany and calais in france

I think correcting is so rude, I would never do that to someone speaking English as a second language, it’s belittling to do that to a stranger, especially pronunciation

i say this all the time. english is so ubiquitous that we have heard it in every accent. someone can mispronounce all the words and put them in the wrong order, completely forget articles and conjugation, and id still get it. my accented german is constantly misunderstood.

there are tons of immigrants in germany and who’s second language is german, i feel like rural areas fit into this for obvious reasons. but other than that germans are just really protective and prideful of their language.

Another aspect: Germans learn English at school for at least 5 years. Obviously the teacher corrects them during the lesson very often to teach them the language. So they are used to be corrected and vice versa they also correct. I know, being corrected too often can be unnerving, but it also has a learning effect.

It’s like the Danes say; English isn’t a language, it’s just how you do business with people you don’t know.

Yes! English is the lingua Franca of the world. I’ve heard English in so many different accents that it does really matter if German pronounced w’s as v’s or French pronounced th’ as z’s or a Russian speaker omits articles. But when Americans use the wrong vowel sound because the o in boat is different than the o in cot I can under why it’s a lil weird if you’re not used to it.

Hmm, that doesn’t really track. We have a lot of immigrants here who only speak broken German. It’s true that we only very rarely hear Americans trying to speak German. So I think it might be the gagging at specifically that.

Correct someone in Germany is Not Seen to be rude. If germans correct someone they just want to be helpful and nice.😎

I think it’s cultural more than anything. The Japanese rarely hear foreigners speak Japanese as a second language, but they won’t correct you. Because it would be seen as impolite.

Too generalised. There are lots of non native German speakers now due to high levels of immigration, More Turks, Syrians, Ukrainians etc. It is about English natives who often don't even try to speak German.

I personally would only korrekt If I notice that someone is learning the language and I feel the ambition to learn it correctly. So it's meant to help.

honestly, I love hearing English as a second language, because sometimes the grammar structures that leak in from their native language are so unique and just a delight to hear. it really just shows how malleable language is

That really depends honestly. A lot of Germans in cities hear lots of non-native german and they never really corrected me much, in fact they’re so excited you’re trying and say terrible German is great

The correcting is often supposed to show respect for you trying to speak our language and thus it's supposed to help you to get even better.

Maybe different kinds of mistake too. In German - grammar - word order, inflection etc In English, irregular pronounciation

In my experience (living in DE for 8 years), it's more often because people think correcting you is helping you. Which still makes me chuckle.

I think it's just a cultural thing. like we get taught to rather point the mistake out even if it's just der instead of das. just so the other is aware.😂😂

Maybe rurally, in Berlin I heard nothing but appreciation for making an effort to learn German even though I could live just fine with only English or even Russian

Genuine question: isn't there a large population of immigrants living in Germany who speak German as a second language (at least in the big cities)?

Germans correct Germans too :)
Ask them what the article of Katzenstreu is. It's "die". People around me usually say "das". We're still not sure what the article for Nutella is and we'll miscorrect anyone who uses a different article than our favorite one 😅

But your observation might be the reason why there is a discrepancy between our "only a little bit of english" and your "yeah, I understand what you're saying, go on."

Correcting politely is fine with me, I hate when they start like…giggling?that’s the only way I can describe it. Like if you think I’m talking slowly and making mistakes I’m going to speak a lot slower and make a lot more mistakes once you start laughing at me🙄
