Shams Tabrizi was a Persian mystic, poet, and spiritual teacher who lived during the 12th and 13th centuries. Though little is known with certainty about his early life, he is believed to have been born in Tabriz, in present-day Iran. Unlike many scholars of his time, Shams spent much of his life traveling, seeking wisdom through direct experience rather than formal institutions. Shams is best known for his transformative friendship with Jalal ad-Din Rumi. When the two met in Konya around 1244, Rumi was already a respected scholar and religious teacher. Their profound spiritual connection changed the course of Rumi's life, inspiring him to become one of history's greatest poets and mystics. Known for his unconventional teachings, Shams challenged hypocrisy, pride, and superficial religiosity.
