An XRF tester has a major flaw: it mostly reads the surface of the metal. If a piece of jewellery is heavily plated, the machine will just read the gold plating and tell you it’s solid. High level scammers know this, and they exploit it using Tungsten. Tungsten is a cheap metal, but it has a troublesome physical property: its density (19.25 g/cm^3) is almost perfectly identical to pure gold (19.3 g/cm^3). If a scammer takes a solid block of tungsten, wraps it in a 2mm shell of pure gold, and hands it to a jeweller, it will feel perfectly heavy. If the jeweller hits it with an XRF scanner, the X-rays won’t penetrate deep enough to hit the tungsten core. The machine will proudly declare the bar is solid gold. To actually catch a tungsten fake, you have to bypass the XRF and use ultrasound waves, or literally drill a hole straight through the middle of the metal
