IRONMAN 70.3 World Champs Marbella 🇪🇸
Here’s how my race unfolded 👇 This was the hardest IRONMAN 70.3 I had ever done... Hilly, technical, windy etc…
IMO this race really showed who the fittest triathletes were as opposed to the most aerodynamic or those just who can push high power because of their weight. SWIM – 27:50 (1:26/100m)
Fast, aggressive start as expected at Worlds. No easy feet to sit on, choppy as expected.
The goal here wasn’t to “win the swim” it was to stay calm, avoid spikes, and exit calmly for the brutal bike ahead. I didn't swim much (3-5km) the weeks before, so I burned quite a few matches during this.  BIKE – 2:39
268W avg
138 bpm avg
1536m of climbing The Marbella bike course is insanely hard.
Long climbs that never ended.
Technical descents where you had to stay switched on the entire time due to the insane winds. You couldn’t just ride steady.
You had to constantly manage effort: Push without burning matches on climbs, and stay just below threshold to not blow up.
Stay aero even when the wind tempted you not to.
Stay safe on sketchy downhills. RUN – 1:27:16
4:11/km
153 bpm avg By the time we hit the run, the damage was already done. The course had hills and wind.
I cramped a few times and had to manage it on the fly. At Worlds, nobody is “comfortable” on the run, everyone is pushing it.
It becomes a decision-making game: Do you fight through it?
Do you take on more carbs?
Do you stay patient or chase? I focused on pushing between 90-95% of what I could do and getting to the finish in one piece. FINAL THOUGHTS World Champs racing was definitely different. It was way more crowded than I was used to as i'm usually at the front of the race, but here we started as the last age group and overtook many older age groups. It was really crowded on course. Overall 10/10 experience.
