@floriangadsby: Here’s how I trim a wide, shallow bowl form, like this and if you fancy watching me throw this shape you can watch my previous reel.   In my experience, and with this clay body, firing temperature, the wider the bowl and the more overhanging the walls are, the wider the foot must be too in order to support it. If it’s too narrow, the walls will slump, the entire form sagging and the interior form distorting dramatically. I despite pots that this happens to, it goes against everything I’ve worked so hard for, perfecting the contrast between the fully curved interior and the angular experience, only for this careful, purposeful difference to be eradicated as it’s fired, the clay softening and drooping.   Another method I’ve been using to prevent this, is to intentionally leave the lowest facet of the walls, (the section that adjoined the foot), thicker than needs be, not so much that the entire pot feels bottom, but just enough so that there’s some sturdiness in the bowl.   It’s all a delicate balance and perfecting these bowls, if that’s possible, has been one long journey of figuring out what forms work best proportionally in my minds-eye, then attempting to make them in such a way that they hold their forms when fired close to cone eleven.
