I see you 🖤 compassion fatigue is so hard. We specialize in at home euthanasias and I try so hard not to lose it every time. Not only are our patients dying, but we are doing the act. Yes euthanasia is a great, selfless thing to do, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect us.

My vet cried with us when we had to put our dog down 3 days after my dad died.

People don’t think the loss of an animal is less than a human. People don’t give the same emotional loss. Not here with me. I build those connections. I keep those connections. And when we lose either the patient or the client, I lose it some times. I had a client tell me her husband passed, and I spent two years building and keeping that relationship with that man and his dog; I rarely saw the wife. But I knew he was battling cancer, that he beat it and then had to battle it all over again. I cry everytime his wife brings in their dog; in the back with Brownie (that’s the dogs name). The first time brownie came back was 4 days after the husband passed. It’s been a few months but it lingers. And another client whose wife passed, her and I would spend 45 minutes on the phone a lot. And we built a connection. She’d send her husband with thank you letters and gifts. And I keep everything she sent me and wrote me. And I still cry over her. There was two weeks where older and sick pets that I made a connection with that passed or had to be put down over a weekend. I e broken down in the lobby, in rooms, I’ve even had to go out the back door to get the tears out. I’m the most emotional at my clinic, but I’m who everyone runs to when anything emotional is happening. I’ve also been there for some owners during, and some who couldn’t be there for that final moment; but the owners ask for me to be there because their pet and I grew that connection.

This is why I left pretty much all social media. I can’t take the lack of empathy in the world anymore.
