I just started my first project and I’m going for 6 feet long just because I like to wrap my scarf around my head a few times to protect my nose (also I’m amazed at how much less yarn knitting uses compared to crochet)

That looks amazing so far! Waffle stitch is fantastic for warm scarves. And yes, scarves are deceptively long because you need to be able to wrap them all the way around and still have some ends left (to look cute of course!)

well now i gotta learn a waffle knit. but I usually do cowls myself. either way, yeah scarves get long. even if your attaching the ends. im working on one too girl.

I like to use the measurement that I like my scarf to be as tall as I am – and if i want to be able to wrap it multiple times, even longer!

Typically you want like a standard rectangle scarf to be as tall as the person wearing it.

6-8ft, 1.5ft wide if you intend for it to be for cold weather vs 5-6ft, 8in-10in wide for “accessory” scarf
