Learned helplessness, entitlement, and no accountability. Those are the 3 constant negative barriers today. We are not giving our children the tools to learn for themselves and be responsible citizens.

I find this with tests. Students will ask about retakes before they even take the test.

I agree... they are used to parents doing everything for them. parents solve all their problems and don't allow them to develop critical thinking skills

This is why when my students ask me how to spell something- I hand them a dictionary to look it up. ( they now hand each other dictionaries lol ) They also know they have to ask me specific questions if they don’t understand something, not just I don’t get it. They have to describe “it” and usually in doing so figure “it” out.

It’s also caused by over reliance of technology. If there isn’t a sparkling line that perfectly shows a kid how to do something they think it’s impossible

Its horrible with my high schoolers. They don't problem solve, they don't try, they expect me to do it for them. It's overwhelming and I am always overstimulated due to it.

Because parents don’t say no - parents don’t show responsibility at home - a big problem and it’s not just middle school. It’s even in lower grades.

It is crazy! You ask them to write something with more than one sentence and they fall apart. Or showing their work for an algebra problem.

I teach kindergarten, and I tell them to be problem solvers. I only help after they try themselves first, because they have to learn to be independent from the beginning.

the amount of college freshmen that don't know basics of living on their own from handwashing dishes to laundry without starting a fire is crazy.

I e had kids that will whine..I cant do it. Its too hard! I go to them, ask tell me what to do. They walk me through the entire problem. I say ok now do problem 2. As soon as I go away...I cant do it...its too hard. They just told me how to do the entire problem.

My students think I’m so mean because I tell them to “figure it out” when it comes to navigating the computer. They freak out the moment it isn’t extremely obvious and 9 times out of 10 if I ignore them they manage on their own. I can’t help EVERY SINGLE SECOND

I have made it a mission over the last few years (since I came into their life as a step-mom) to teach my teen boys about weaponized incompetence and actively work to ensure they aren’t portraying themselves as helpless or ignorant.

All of what you said. It's in South Korea. I give hints but won't spoon feed them. Kids do respond to "I know you can.. it's there in you..." and when they do it by themselves I praise them for doing it and say "Look at that you did it all by yourself and you didn't need me! Good for you!" I see such vast confidence improvement even as the ESL teacher in kids when they learn they don't need help, they need independence encouragement.

You’re spot on. The challenging this is that you CANNOT give them the answer. They will try to do everything humanly possible to try and get you to just tell them the answer or how to do it. Stick to the bread crumbs and slowly but surely they will all start to come around. Baby steps
