in the past pre-colonial times. the Benin, Esan, Urhobo and others who came from same original source technically speak various dialects of one Edo language.. all these what you call languages are technically dialects including benin dialect of the Edo language... Simple!

In the 15th century, during the reign of Oba Ewuare the Great (c. 1440–1473), the short answer is yes, most of what we now call Edo State was part of the Benin Empire, but the relationship was complicated. Ewuare is the ruler who transformed Benin from a small kingdom into a massive military empire. He was the one who renamed the city Edo (after a loyal servant) and began a series of conquests that brought the surrounding regions under his control. The Expansion into Esan and Afemai Lands During this specific century, the "Empire" was being built through both force and migration: The "Great Migration": Many of the founders of Esan West (and other Esan towns) were actually Bini chiefs and citizens who fled the capital during Ewuare’s reign. Ewuare had enacted very strict laws (such as banning sex and hygiene for years to mourn his sons). People fled into the forests to escape these laws. The Re-Conquest: Ewuare didn't just let them go. He pursued them and brought those forest settlements back under his authority. He began the tradition of appointing Enijie (local kings) in Esanland, many of whom were his own sons or trusted generals. The Afemai Region: To the north, Ewuare's armies pushed through to bring the Afemai and Owan areas into the fold as vassal territories that provided resources and protected the empire’s northern borders. What was it called then? In the 15th century, your girlfriend’s ancestors wouldn't have called the whole area "Edo State." The Capital: Was called Edo (renamed by Ewuare from Igodomigodo). The Sovereignty: It was the Kingdom of Benin. The Identity: If you lived in the Esan West area then, you were a subject of the Oba of Benin, but you likely identified primarily with your local community (e.g., Ekpoma or Irrua) while acknowledging that you were part of the Oba’s dominion. The Power of Ewuare's "Edo" It’s worth noting that Ewuare is the reason the state is called Edo today. He was so influential that he basically "branded" the entire civilization. By the mid-15th century, the Benin Empire was the dominant superpower in West Africa, featuring a massive wall and moat system that was one of the largest earthwork
