2 children and a pregnant woman are among those reportedly killed in a mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, Friday evening. Local reporting puts the death toll at 9, including the suspected gunman, following a shooting that ended in a police standoff. Officers responded around 5 p.m. on October 9 to the 700 block of Perry Street, near East 7th Street. Witnesses reported seeing a man firing a handgun outside a home before going inside. When police arrived, 2 women were found dead in the street. The gunman barricaded himself inside the house, bringing SWAT officers to the scene. Police repeatedly ordered him to surrender, but additional gunshots were heard inside during the standoff. When officers eventually entered, they discovered more victims throughout the home, including children. The suspected shooter was also found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the scene as one of the most difficult and heartbreaking his officers and investigators have ever encountered. He confirmed that the suspect was dead and said there was no ongoing threat to the public. As of Saturday morning, the victims’ identities and the suspected shooter’s name had not been released. Authorities had not publicly explained a motive or the relationships between the people involved. The reported total of 9 deaths came from local news coverage; the chief did not provide an exact count in his initial remarks. Families in Erie are waking up to unimaginable loss this morning, including the deaths of 2 children. So many lives lost .
