Telling yourself NOT to think about snacking or food is a recipe for disaster if you’re actually trying not to think about snacking or food… ⚠ 🐘This is referred to as the pink elephant theory and it works like this… The very act of trying to stop thinking about snacking requires us first to acknowledge it and then try to push it away. This mental process means that our brain needs to access the thought of snacking first, in order to then try to avoid it. This can inadvertently then strengthen the neural pathway in our mind associated with thinking about snacking, making that thought easier to access in the future and so more likely to pop up. If someone told you NOT to think about a pink elephant – guess what the first thing is that you’ll likely be thinking about..! 🤦‍♀️ This is referred to as the pink elephant theory, the ironic process theory or the white bear phenomenon. Within the health and wellness space, this can sometimes be referred to as ‘food noise’.🗣 Instead of trying not to think about snacking, an often more effective approach is to: ✅ Acknowledge the thoughts about wanting to snack ✅ Allow these thoughts to be present without judgement ✅ Then consciously shift our focus onto habits and behaviours that we want to do more of instead. If you’ve been struggling with pesky ongoing thoughts about snacking and food and would like some mindset tips and tools to get on top of them, give NuWay Health Coaching a follow! #healthcoach #healthcoaching #comforteating #snacks #snacking #foodcraving #weightlossjourney #weightlosstips #comforteatingcoach #mindset #mindsettips #psychology #mindsetmatters #foodnoise
