To think we studied this in high school as part of our curriculum and in many cases in my small town school and for a lot of our smaller Maori communities, this movie was too close to home. It’s a brilliant piece of art by Lee Tamahori. He gave voice and opened eyes to many of our vulnerable through this movie

I wish I had protection like this. I was being abused in foster care and told mum and the social worker and they sent me back numerous times after running away. I’m still fighting for justice. OT and abuse in New Zealand is shocking.

the point of this movie is the uselessness of violence, all that happened bc of him - jake the mess - the strongest man alive, who served his daughter to her abuser, his rage and anger is pointless, she is gone, his family destroyed.
