my opinion is Martin was actually a coward but he met minerva and he actually loved her and tried to be a better person for her and finn and it shows in the episode of minerva and Martin after he met her he stopped tricking people and spent time with finn ( when min left for work he sat all the time with finn) and when he was attacked he grabbed finn immediately and ran away and said something like "your father will find a way out" and don't get me started on the "Finn, I'll be back for you". also he sacrificed himself bc he could've died fighting the guard. but he never remembered any of that and lost his mind.
