@dantedanio: The Moscow Council of 1666–1667 was a major church assembly of the Russian Orthodox Church, convened by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich and Patriarch Joasaph II. It was held to address the church reforms introduced by Patriarch Nikon, which aimed to align Russian liturgical practices with Greek traditions. The council condemned and deposed Nikon for overstepping his authority but at the same time confirmed his reforms, making them obligatory. As a result, those who opposed the changes, later known as the Old Believers, were anathematized and persecuted. The council marked a turning point in Russian church history, leading to a deep religious schism. #oldbelievers #easternorthodox #edit #старообрядцы #orthodoxchristianity
