@farmwithdaviddaniel: 20 Mistakes New Goat & Sheep Farmers Must Avoid Starting a goat and sheep farm can be exciting, but many beginners fail because they repeat avoidable mistakes. If you are new to this business, read carefully — this could save you time, money, and heartache. 0. Not reading to the end and Not Typing thank you on the comments section after learning these. (Ungratefulness). 1. Skipping Quarantine Never mix new animals with your herd immediately. Quarantine for at least 30 days, check health, trim hooves, and vaccinate before introduction. 2. No Parasite Plan Worms kill more goats than predators. Don’t deworm everyone blindly. Learn FAMACHA scoring and treat only the weak ones. 3. Neglecting Kid/Lamb Care Many kids die in the first 24 hours due to poor colostrum intake. Make sure each newborn gets enough colostrum, stays warm, and has a clean navel. 4. Ignoring Vaccination CDT (Clostridium & Tetanus) is basic insurance. Start kids at 6–8 weeks, booster later, and vaccinate adults yearly. 5. Poor Housing Damp, dark, and crowded pens breed diseases. Build dry, airy, and spacious pens that are easy to clean. 6. Weak Fencing Goats will test every corner of your fence. Use strong fencing and, if possible, add an electric wire. 7. Feeding Errors Goats need copper; sheep are sensitive to copper. Don’t use the same mineral mix for both. Balance calcium and phosphorus, especially for males, to prevent urinary stones. 8. Breeding Too Early Don’t breed based on age alone. Breed when females reach at least 60–70% of their mature weight to avoid stunted growth. 9. Buying from the Wrong Sources Cheap animals at open markets often carry hidden diseases. Buy from trusted farms with good records. 10. No Records What you don’t measure, you can’t improve. Record births, weights, expenses, treatments, and sales. 11. No Market Plan Don’t raise goats or sheep without knowing where and when to sell. Plan around festive demand, build buyers’ trust, and avoid distress selling. 12. Scaling Too Fast Start small. Master your system first, then expand. Don’t add animals faster than you can feed or manage. 13. Neglecting Hoof Care Trim hooves regularly. Waiting until goats limp is too late. 14. Poor Predator Control Never assume you are safe. Dogs, coyotes, or thieves can wipe out your stock. Secure pens and consider guardian animals. 15. Inconsistent Routine Animals thrive on consistency. Feed and check them at the same times daily. 16. DIY Everything Without a Vet Guesswork kills animals. Build a relationship with a vet. 17. Dirty Pens for Kids/Lambs Mixing ages, wet floors, and overcrowding invite coccidiosis. Keep young ones in dry, clean spaces. 18. Overlooking Social Media Trust Posting only sales adverts kills credibility. Share your journey, show results, and be transparent. Trust sells more than flyers. 19. Chasing Profit Over Credibility Don’t cut corners to make quick money. A good reputation will open doors money cannot buy. 20. No Mentorship The fastest way to fail is to go alone. Walk with experienced farmers, join a community, and learn before you leap. Finally In goat and sheep farming, money may buy animals, but reputation and knowledge keep the farm alive. Learn from others’ mistakes and build wisely. At Doxaon Integrated Farm Resort, we guide farmers to success with: Three Manuals on Goat & Sheep Farming — $33 (₦49,000) 12-Month Mentorship Program — $100 (₦150,000) Doxaon Cooperative Community — invest in exotic breeds and share profits Home Pen Initiative Project (HPIP) — low-cost, hygienic pens for families Farm Machinery Solutions — grass shredders, pelletizing machines, and more Don’t start blind. Start right. If this was helpful type "THANK YOU " on the comment section. #DoxaonFarmResort #FarmWithDavidDaniel #GoatAndSheepFarming #HPIP
