If you spent your teenage years at the Wakeman, you know it wasn't just a school—it was a front-row seat to the heartbeat of Shrewsbury. Standing right on the edge of the English Bridge, the building itself felt like a gateway between the town centre and the history of Abbey Foregate. A Legacy of "Tech" and Talent For those of us who went there, the school always felt a bit different. It started life in 1938 as the Shrewsbury Technical School (the "Tech"), and that practical, creative energy never really left. Even after it was renamed in 1961—after Sir Offley Wakeman—everyone still knew its reputation for the arts. Walking those corridors, you were constantly reminded of the building's age. There were always rumours about the "basement morgue" from its days as a wartime training centre, and if you were lucky enough to be there toward the end, you’ll remember the state-of-the-art ICT suite that finally brought the cellar into the 21st century. The "Wakeman End" and Gay Meadow You couldn’t talk about being a Wakeman student without mentioning Gay Meadow. For decades, the school and the Shrewsbury Town football ground were practically joined at the hip. The View: If your classroom faced the back of the school, you didn’t need a ticket. You could watch the match right from your desk. The "Wakeman End": The South Stand of the stadium was literally called the "Wakeman End" (or the Tech End) because it backed right onto our school wall. The Coracles: On match days, we’d watch Fred Davies in his coracle, paddling out into the Severn to rescue balls that had been hoofed over the Riverside Terrace. It was a local ritual that made the school feel like part of a living museum. When the stadium was demolished in 2007, the atmosphere changed. The roar of the "Blue and Amber Army" was replaced by the quiet of residential flats, marking the end of an era for the town. Our Backyard: The Abbey Gardens While other schools had sprawling fields, we had the Abbey Gardens. Tucked between the school and the river, it was the ultimate "chill-out" spot. It wasn’t just a park; it was a collection of architectural ghosts. Because it had once been a stone yard for the architect John Carline, the gardens were (and still are) filled with random fragments of old Shrewsbury buildings. Student Memory: We used to sit on the benches near the Ionic Column or the Grade II listed rockery, eating lunch while looking at the statue of Rowland Hill. It was a pocket of tranquility right in the middle of our school day. The Final Chapter and the "Look Up" Trail It still stings a bit that the school closed in 2013. Despite a massive "Why Waste Wakeman" campaign, the council decided the numbers didn't add up. Our final year felt like a long goodbye, ending with the creation of the Wakeman "Look Up" Art Town Trail. If you walk through Shrewsbury today, you’ll see ceramic plaques in bricked-up windows and doorways—bits of art made by students over 30 years. It’s a permanent piece of us left in the brickwork of the town. The building is now part of Shrewsbury College, so at least the "Tech" is still being used for education. But for those of us who wore the green and black, it will always just be the Wakeman. #wakemanschool #Shrewsbury #shrewsburyschool
