I’ve flown the same roster pattern twice in the past fortnight—and absolutely loved every minute of being a Pilot of the Caribbean. Eight sectors to and from Barbados, with some spectacular island-hopping into Grenada in the middle of each trip. Flying long haul usually means cruising between major international hubs, often 6 to 12 hours at high altitude before descending into another sprawling airport. So these short 35-minute hops around the Caribbean are a real treat—and a brilliant way to sharpen flying skills. Flying a widebody jet into relatively small airports demands a different kind of airmanship. Many of the islands don’t have parallel taxiways, so after landing, we have to backtrack the runway and complete a tight 180° turn before taxiing to stand. Departures require the same in reverse—every manoeuvre reminding you just how big your aircraft really is. These shuttles connect London and Grenada via Barbados, with customers joining or leaving us at both points. It’s hands-on flying at its best—short sectors, and the opportunity to really fly the aircraft.
