The Story of Elmina Castle Elmina Castle, also known as St. George’s Castle, is one of the most famous historical landmarks in Ghana and the oldest European building still standing in sub-Saharan Africa. It was built in 1482 by the Portuguese, led by explorer Diogo de Azambuja. At first, the castle served as a trading post for gold, ivory, and other natural resources. This is why the place was called “Elmina,” meaning “the mine” in Portuguese. However, with time, the castle became deeply tied to the transatlantic slave trade. From the 16th to the 19th century, Elmina Castle was used as a slave-trading hub. Captives from different parts of West Africa were imprisoned in the castle’s dark dungeons, often in terrible conditions, while waiting to be shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas and the Caribbean. The castle changed hands many times: • In 1637, the Dutch captured it from the Portuguese and controlled it for over 200 years. • In 1872, the British took over, adding it to the Gold Coast colony. During these centuries, the castle was both a symbol of European power and a site of immense human suffering. Thousands of men, women, and children passed through its “Door of No Return,” never to see their homeland again. Today, Elmina Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It serves as a reminder of the painful history of slavery, but also as a place of learning, reflection, and remembrance for people of African descent and the world at large.
