It’s all in the lyrical structure, it’s very heavily influenced by hip hop but delivered in a typical “metal” fashion, bands like Korn I feel definitely paved the way for bands like linkin park. Again I don’t think the lead singer has to be a rapper for the band to be a nu metal band, look at some Korn lyrics and try to rap them, you’ll find they flow pretty well. 😎

Korn is said to be the father of "Nu-Metal" and their first album had no Rap whatsoever but their attire, their style, looked very Hip Hop and I'd say that's where I say it's kind of "influenced" by hip hop, my favorite band is SOAD and I defl don't consider them Nu-Metal with their sound sounding like it does
