I was so excited to get the chance to try a fragrance sample from Shay & Blue Boutique Perfumery. I love scents that aren’t over-complicated and that use clean ingredients, so S&B seemed like a great fit. They use naturally sourced ingredients that are certified organic, vegan, cruelty free, and clean. Black Tulip is peppery at first spray, which adds some mystery. But the dry-down is a bit too floral for my tastes, I do think it’s an interesting floral, though, so if you like them this may be one to try. 3/5 Salt Caramel is a sweet gourmand just as the name suggests, but the caramel has more nuance than a lot of caramel fragrances I’ve tried. There’s a nuttiness and brown butter scent behind it that helps ground the sweetness. Gourmands are often not my favorites, but I quite like this one. 4/5 Melrose Apple Blossom is more floral than I usually go for, but it has a beautiful summer vibe that reminds me of the countryside in Virginia with honeysuckle and magnolia blooms. The fruit comes through, too, but it is a light blossom of apple not a fall orchard. 4/5 Lilacs & Gooseberries starts out very powdery, and keeps some of that sensibility on dry down. The lilac isn’t as aggressively floral as I worried it might be, and it pairs nicely with the sweet berry scent. Overall, this was my least favorite of the discovery set as it had a kind of odd after scent on my skin. 2/5 Blood Oranges opens with a slightly bitter citrus feel, but quickly develops some spice and a hint of floral.
