The monk seal shown in this video isn’t just “some seal.” Her name is Lani, a well-known and deeply loved Hawaiian monk seal that many people in the community recognize and help protect. 🤍 In Hawaiʻi, monk seals are more than just wildlife sightings. They are a rare and special part of the islands themselves. That’s why seeing someone throw a rock at Lani sparked so much outrage across the community. The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth, with only around 1,600 left in the wild. Found nowhere else except the Hawaiian Islands, every seal matters. When it comes to wildlife, the rule is simple: Observe. Respect. Give space. Wild animals are not props, entertainment, or something to provoke for a reaction. Whether it’s monk seals, sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays, or any other marine life, responsible wildlife interactions help keep both animals and people safe. If you see a monk seal You Can Help * Keep dogs on a leash and well away from seals * Use an alternate beach during the nursing period * Stay at least 150 feet away – half the length of a football field – from mothers with pups * Stay at least 50 feet away from all monk seals * Remain behind any posted signs, cones, or barriers * Avoid swimming near a mother and pup * Use a camera zoom or binoculars instead of approaching If you witness wildlife harassment in Hawaiʻi, report it to the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline: 📞 (888) 256-9840 #HawaiianMonkSeal #RespectWildlife #WildlifeEducation #EndangeredSpecies #MarineConservation
