Yeah, sorry, but this is irresponsible and uninformed. Evidence-based medicine is already under attack, so this concept of doctors overprescribing because they’re lazy or you should try yoga first for depression is stigmatizing life-saving treatment. I usually agree with your content, but not here.

My biggest gripe with ssri usage, as someone diagnosed in their teens but not medicated until adulthood, is who has been prescribing them. PCPs/GPs are not who should be managing these chronic illnesses. They don’t have the specialized training but we don’t have good enough access to psychiatric specialists.

Typically patients last resort is typically medication. Most people with mental illness have tried other things first. So going to the doctor is typically AFTER they tried everything. So she was absolutely creating EVEN MORE stigma.

I completely disagree and think anti-SSRI is the majority opinion and more people actually need it. Of course the solutions are structural but in the mean time antidepressants for everyone!!

I’m a senior in a psych degree. I think overall these medications are helpful, it’s not and should not be seen as a long term solution. They’re the best solution for now, but we NEED TO KEEP FUNDING PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH. That’s the important thing.

I have SEVERE driving anxiety when I’m going out of town. My doctor keeps trying to get me on meds but it’s situational anxiety. I don’t want to take meds every day for something that affects me once every few months

I was prescribed sertraline in college for social anxiety without ever meeting with a psychiatrist. It didn’t help and it honestly made things worse. SSRIs are lifesavers for some people but they are absolutely overprescribed.

every time one of these conversations comes up, it's important to remind everyone that conditions such as depression have likely not become more common. it is simply the case that before the advent of drugs to treat these conditions, people suffering from them didn't make it very far. The people prescribing these mefs have over a decade of experience and training by the time you're sitting in a room with them. This discourse is simple anti-intelectualism

hi! also a final year psych student about to be M1 and I take lexapro :) This take is a highly sensitive one. nothing to do with the right or blah blah anything like that and yet somehow all of yall missing the point.
