This is completely normal way of paying in my country. Just families or dates usualy pay all together but when there is a group of friends or coworkers they pay separately. I always ask if they pay together or separately and if they want to pay separately I just ask "and what are you paying for?" easy question and it is not m job to remmber who ate what, they have to know.
