It's called milk and has a dark room. It's a circuit party.

So, a circuit party with subjectively better music 😂

It sounds like the “I’m not like other girls” of circuit parties

circuit music = circuit party. however, if all other circuit party boxes are checked but you play house/techno music, you can't really clutch your pearls when people call it a circuit party 🤷🏻♂️

The dark room is keeping you’re heady-high-class music/vision from really landing

There’s been a semantic shift, its circuit party is now an umbrella term and you’re just describing a circuit party with good music.

The music and the crowd make it circuit

Went to this party this past weekend and kept having to defend that it was in fact not a circuit party to my friends

You literally described a circuit party. I mean, I guess *aside* from the music, but maybe you just have an Alolan circuit party. Same idea, different typing and design points.

I’m a bit at a loss as to why circuit music/tribal house came to be seen as “bad” as opposed to “house and techno” which at its core is the same kind of thing (metallic beats with 4 on the floor and some vocals and goes on for hours). why the prejudice? is it wanting distance from something that feels “old?” I can’t help but wonder why the knee-jerk desire to distance yourself from a community that behaves almost identical to the one you inhabit? not being accusatory just spitballing here and wondering if there’s more common ground here than we think lol

Many of us think of “circuit” as an umbrella term for all of the types of parties you described here, similar to how queer applies to all different subgenres of queer.

Agree with music being a key factor of what events I attend. But I don’t think you’ll be able to change our minds about using the term circuit when we as a community have been using the term very loosely. I guess for Milk, you can market like “Gag” party by Alex Chapman as a queer party. Or a gay techno warehouse party.

As a house girlie here - I understand the struggle of defending the difference. I always get the “well you go to EDM festivals and those are the same as circuit parties” 😡 If I wanted to listen to pots and pans bang together for hours I can do that at home for a hell of a lot cheaper

You seem like a real fan of electronic music and took time to learn/ recognize the differences. I think maybe the avg gay partygoer consumer won’t know (or care) about the technical differences btwn the genres. They’ll see all the markers that resemble what they already know (circuit parties) and engage with your event accordingly. Maybe you just lean into it and make the bag sister!

So like your party that just booked Heidi Lawden, I’d say is an underground afters that’s a gay/queer safe space, plays proper house/disco/techno. Circuit parties I typically think of as having bad music def not an underground sound, typically much more pedestrian/main stream

the crowd. if the crowd of the party leans masc + white + fit, i categorize it as circuit in my head. music plays a part too but i feel like the usual circuit crowd will go to any party that has the vibe i mentioned above ^^

Most people don't understand the difference between the party styles... Just try to educate where you can. It's the music and stimuli style and if there's a "show" during the event.

IMO the music defines a circuit party. Circuit music is different from techno/house!

You’re thinking of circuit party in terms of music everybody else is thinking circuit party in terms of the people that go there. It’s the same circuit party crowd just because the music is different. Doesn’t really change anything.

Never been to a circuit party, so I can’t speak from experience, but as a gay who’s been going to house/techno events since I was 18 I agree with everything you’re saying. Circuit is definitely more EDM, big room house tracks with diva vocals over the top (MainStage at EDC type vibes) and the vids I’ve seen of those events look like nothing I’d ever wanna go to. The party you helped put together sounds like a good time though. I don’t think people understand all house/techno is not created equal…so circuit party house ≠ underground warehouse house/techno/etc. I’m the same way in that I wouldn’t attend a party that was labeled as a circuit party, but a warehouse style gay rave sounds right up my alley! 🕺🏼
