@burlesquewithgv: The short answer is you create your own scene and community 💞it does however take time, dedication, perseverance, resources and audacity. 🐆 But I believe in you. Even putting together a show in your backyard with your friends is still a show. You know what I’m saying? 🥳 Don’t let anything stop you if you have a dream. Be ungovernable and unstoppable (who said that?) And I’m always here if you’ll have any questions about presence, performance, or anything else. 😘
I was in the 90s.
It was definitely WAY different. When we first started, we weren't even getting paid at first. It was just for funsies. It, at least in my city (which was arguably ground zero for the burlesque revival), was started by a group of dancers at the club I worked at. The rules at the club were pretty relaxed, so it was the one more "alternative" club on the strip, and a few of the ladies would do "burlesque-ish" numbers on stage.
The roots of the burlesque revival are definitely more bootstrapped and counter culture than people realize.
But art finds a way. Someone reached out to a woman, who used to perform back in the 50s/60s, to pass her knowledge down since there wasn't even youtube back then. We were lucky. In other places, people just had to figure it out.
I miss those days haha
