Decarlos Brown Jr.'s Chilling Attack on Ukrainian Refugee Iryna Zarutska" NewsWithLala September 11,2025 CHARLOTTE, NC — In a harrowing incident that has captivated national attention, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, was fatally stabbed aboard a Charlotte light rail train on August 22, 2025. The unprovoked attack, captured on surveillance footage, has raised questions about mental health, public safety, and the adequacy of the criminal justice system. Zarutska, who fled the war in Ukraine seeking safety in the United States, was seated on the Lynx Blue Line when Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, approached her from behind. Without any prior interaction, Brown pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed Zarutska multiple times, including a fatal wound to the neck. He then exited the train and was arrested on the platform. Zarutska was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown, a Charlotte resident, has a lengthy criminal history with 14 prior arrests, including charges for robbery with a dangerous weapon and misuse of the 911 system. He has also been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
