You missed the parts where consumer reports said the would recommend it if it came with a case. Apple gave everyone case and they still wouldn’t recommend it. CR made so much money from making hay about the iPhone they did it for years. Also when Apple had the press conference they showed you could do the same thing with the competitors phones.

So the reason this happened and was not caught during testing. Is that for months, Apple employees tested the phone in the San Francisco Bay area with hard plastic cases on them so nobody would know it was a prototype iPhone 4. This was done to camouflage the phone from prying eyes, industrial espionage, and Internet bloggers. But because no Apple employee actually handled the phone with their bare hands in the field. The problem is not discovered.

I worked for AT&T when that phone came out. We sold so many of them, everyone used a case, wasn’t a big deal.

Apple gave us free cases. Little bumper grip things that didn’t protect the phone but prevented us from shorting the antenna. I had one day 1
