I do the same thing but I do it based on which drawer they are going in or the closet...like top drawer bottom drawer etc

I do one better! I do a load of JUST shirts, JUST pants, JUST socks/undies/towels. It works because there are two of us, so there’s enough to do loads like that, but I do have to be caught up on laundry for it to be effective.
