@shaylatalei: There have been so many questions lately about why I’m on TPN and how it works—so I wanted to walk through it clearly 💛 I have gastroparesis, which means my stomach is paralyzed. Gastroparesis has no cure. I was placed on a J-tube (which delivers food into the small intestine instead of the stomach), but my body didn’t tolerate it. I was still getting sick, still losing weight, and still in pain. That’s when my medical team decided to transition me to TPN (total parenteral nutrition). TPN is not digested at all. It bypasses the stomach and intestines completely and delivers all of my nutrients and fluids through a central line that connects to my heart. I have a port (also called a portacath) in my chest that allows the TPN to infuse directly into my bloodstream. Each TPN bag is custom-made based on my labs and contains a mix of calories, protein, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, fluids, and sometimes medications. I infuse mine over 18 hours every day, and it’s how I stay alive. The setup is detailed and sterile for a reason—one mistake could lead to serious infections or complications. So even when I’m exhausted or in pain, I still show up and follow every step. Because I have to. This isn’t a temporary solution. It’s not a backup plan. It’s how I survive.
