She’s MILES ahead of others because she sees the bigger picture of connection and marketing. I had an argument with a friend that as an African, and I’ve lived in several countries. That the era of artists being famous across different cultures and ages. That not even Taylor Swift has that. Cos the whole mania started out in the streaming era. Not at the start of her career. They thought I was hating on her. Back then, our mum, aunties, your school teacher, your friend in Spain, we were all listening to the same songs. It’s different now. Told them I didn’t even know Taylor was a big deal until I moved out of Nigeria 😂. But Beyoncé, Rihanna etc. they have that advantage over her. Then they throw around numbers. Like, an artist today could sell 5 million and I won’t still know them. That’s the difference between now and then. Then you could sell 100k and we will all know cos we had no option to choose who we listen to.

I have shifted focus to catering the most to those invested in me and that means more personalized and in person interactions than I did before, answering comments as personally as possible, and putting my whole heart into these people who cate about my work. You have to do it from a grassroots level. When you are a brand new artist, you need to treat every interaction with fans a gold. Build a personal connection beyond music. It takes years. Those fans at the beginning are the backbone when you are 15-20 years into a career. Taylor has done it better than anyone. Fan fests just to meet her, secret listening sessions, surprise presents delivered personally or dropping in unannounced to play at a fans wedding. The daily diary entries on MySpace. All of the nerdy stuff she did that many saw as uncool including puzzles and Easter eggs bonded fear to the fans. It felt personal. Now they buy without hearing a single note.
