💉 DOs & DON’Ts OF IM INJECTION EVERY NURSING STUDENT SHOULD KNOW DO ✅ • Confirm the medication, dose, patient, route, and expiry date before administration. • Perform hand hygiene and use aseptic technique. • Choose the correct injection site based on the patient’s age, muscle size, medication, and facility protocol. • Use the appropriate needle size and length for the patient and medication. • Assess the injection site before giving the injection. • Clean the site appropriately and allow it to dry. • Insert the needle using the correct technique and angle. • Dispose of the needle immediately in a sharps container. DON’T ❌ • Don’t give an IM injection without checking the medication carefully. • Don’t use the wrong injection site. • Don’t use an inappropriate needle size or length. • Don’t inject into an area that is infected, bruised, swollen, or injured. • Don’t reuse needles or syringes. • Don’t recap used needles unless specifically required by an approved safety procedure. • Don’t ignore the patient’s allergies or previous reactions. • Don’t rush the procedure. ⚠️ Remember: An IM injection may look simple, but the wrong medication, wrong site, wrong needle, or wrong technique can cause serious complications.
