@lynseyaddario: As Sudan’s civil war enters its third year, the scale of displacement is staggering: 14 million, with more than four million Sudanese have fled the country as refugees and over nine million are displaced within its borders. Entire neighbourhoods in and around Khartoum lie in ruins after battles between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF. I met malnourished children who had survived nearly two years under RSF control before being freed only recently, and families who lost access to treatment when USAID cuts forced many organizations to abandon their medical programs. Across the border in Chad, the crisis continues: with budgets slashed, the UN can no longer provide the shelters and food it once did. Women, children, and the most vulnerable spend their days exposed under the 100+ degree sun - after fleeing horrific violence. Since the start of the year, I’ve travelled from Khartoum to the Nuba Mountains to Darfur and into Chad to capture the brutal toll of this war. Until recently, the U.S. was the largest donor to Sudan. Now thousands have been left with nothing.
