Pharaohs were expected to rule according to Ma’at, judges were expected to uphold it, and ordinary people were encouraged to live in a way that preserved balance between themselves, society, nature, and the gods. Her most famous symbol was the ostrich feather. In ancient Egyptian funerary belief, the heart of the deceased could be weighed against the Feather of Ma’at in the Hall of Judgment. A heart in harmony with Ma’at demonstrated that the person had lived justly and was worthy of continuing into the afterlife. If the heart failed the test, the consequences were far more serious. What fascinates me most is that Ma’at was not simply something Egyptians hoped to encounter after death. It was something they were expected to practice while alive. Truth mattered. Justice mattered. The way you treated others mattered. Some traditions also speak of the Seven Ma’ats, expressing ideals such as truth, justice, harmony, balance, order, reciprocity, and propriety. Together, they reflect an ancient idea that a meaningful life requires more than power or wealth. It requires living in alignment with something greater than yourself.
