as someone who interned with a publishing house under an editor- do what the fanfiction authors do! find yourself some dedicated beta readers, commission artists that you enjoy that make digital art, and worry about the audio book later!

you can edit it yourself, you don't need an audiobook, and you can get a book cover on fiverr for ~150$. even if you did need all those things, $8k is not an incredible amount of money. should be able to cover that with a personal loan.

You do need to pay for those things, but you don’t need to pay that much. You can find editors, narrators, and cover artists who cost less yet are still professional. But there will be expenses, just as there are with any other business.

Honestly, I don't even think you really need to necessarily edit as much as you think. I wish authors were more authentic with their work. Make little mistakes, spelling errors, etc. They're little easter eggs. I want to feel your emotions as I read it exactly how you intended.

It's true, but it's also true that is not the only way. I didn't hire an editor, and although I'm well aware that my book could have typos or plot holes, I really can't afford one at the moment. I don't think the audiobook is a must-have, and I designed my own cover, but as many commented here there're other options, like Fiverr. It's really a good feeling, as a writer, to see your book published, not all writers have the same privileges, nor the same goals, so what works for you, may not work for others.

There ate so many free resources online to edit and you can do the audio book and cover. AI can help with the cover

It costs me a couple of hundred! It would’ve been a few grand if I went with a traditional editor though, which I will do in the future! I had beta readers and prowritingaid and both helped a ton

There are non- AI cover artists in fb groups who offer designs for $30-200. Most hover in the $75-80 range.

I know several people who have done it and it cost nothing close to that. you don't need a editor at all and can find English majors or teachers tgat will do it for like a couple hundred, cover is like $30, audio book is like free. maybe if you paid the highest paid professional with the most expensive options would it cost that much

Acx has problems cuz Amazon is evil but you can get a solid narrator there for a more affordable rate (and pay them directly). Also miblart is a Ukrainian artist group that does solid covers for $300
