@thegastrogingerpa: GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) aka heartburn, aka reflux, aka acid reflex (😜) is one of the most common diagnoses that we manage in the GI world! The medications that often are used to treat this are known as PPIs or Proton Pump Inhibitors. As with everything in life and definitely in healthcare there are always 2 sides to every coin. There are benefits and risks to any and all things. Here are my thoughts on these sorts of medications! #guthealth #gerd #healthcare #thegastrogingerpa #primarycare
what’s your thoughts on PPI and EOE? How does it work to help with eoe (patho)?

Im on Omeprazole, but not for GERD, I have gastroparesis and throw up a lot. The way they explained it is that if I am going to throw up its would be helpful to my esophagus to have it not be so acidic.

Great video! The increased risk of osteoporosis and vitamin deficiencies is theoretical but hasn’t actually been reproduced in the studies. They have shown a very small increased risk of interstitial nephritis, however, so should be used with caution in those with severe kidney disease

Started on pantoprazole, upped to omeprazole and now on esomeprazole. If I forget too many times, my reflux will LOUDLY remind me at the most inconvenient times. It’ll probably be a lifelong med for me with achalasia treated with POEM.

Omeprazole exacerbated depression and anxiety. Any suggestions on a different ppi?

I have tried and tried to get off PPI’s for 26 years, since I was pregnant with my son. I can’t even go for 1 day missing a dose. When I lost health insurance, I tried to push past to see if it would level out and the reflux was so bad it was like severe chest pain. After that, I just bought Vit D and calcium. If I demineralize, it’s better than esophageal cancer. 🤷🏼♀️
