I love your videos but I think billing out a charge for OHI, perio eval, nutrition counseling, etc. is so wrong. I work for a corporate office and we “bill” it out to insurance but it’s $0.00

That is shady billing. You are playing a game to see if the insurance company pays you. More money in your pocket. Why not bill the patient then if insurance denies it? How fair is it to the patient who does not have insurance and you don't bill them? Why do you think premiums are so high?

my office manager told me that if you bill something to insurance and they deny it and then you write it off apparently that’s insurance fraud. idk if that’s true or not but stay safe queen

Medicaid plans typically cover OHI, but some will have a frequency (in MD it's 1/yr). Private insurances are about 50/50 on covering/not covering, but typically have age limitations AND frequency. Also, prep your front desk because they will get lots of calls from angry patients when its on an EOB. Some will be angry that you "wasted" their benefits because insurance covered & some will be angry that you're "charging" even if you write off.

I don’t know where you live but OHI and Nutritional Counseling codes are covered up to the age of 6 by Medicaid in Montana.

you certainly can put it in patient charts that it was done, completed, and charged out but at 0.00 i think. Off the top of my head, i don’t think insurances would give reimbursement for that, maybe ohi instructions but not much else. I think it would fall along the same lines as charging for a post op of treatment, it’s just kinda one of those things that’s included yk?

I’m in canada so slightly diff obviously but I give standard OHI (brush 2x, floss in eve, etb preferably, suggest adjuncts that are patient-specific and so forth) to everyone as standard of care, and only charge OHI as a code when I apply disclosing agent, show the pt and then spend time physically demonstrating brushing and flossing on the patient in the mirror. usually I do this for new patients, or patients that are not improving with their homecare and motivated to do better.
