Unlike channel proteins that provide open pores, carrier proteins work by binding to the substance they transport, undergoing a conformational (shape) change, and then releasing it on the opposite side of the membrane. This process can occur through facilitated diffusion, which does not require energy and moves substances down their concentration gradient, or through active transport, which uses energy, usually in the form of ATP, to move substances against their gradient.
