Here are some: • given the number of washes they might have had (especially vintage) - there may be less chemical load (from dyes, products used in textile treatment etc.) seeping onto the skin • someone else’s ‘trash’ is another’s ‘treasure’ & we keep items from ending up in landfill (over 85% of clothing in the U.S. alone, goes to landfill) • it is an absolute HACK for buying natural material clothing (like organic cotton, hemp, linen, silk, wool) at a major discount • sites like @thredup offer a massive selection of pre-owned organic clothing for discounts upwards of 90% (just search ‘organic clothing’ on their search bar) • vintage clothing is often made more durable than the clothing of today (better craftsmanship) • second-hand clothing can be quite affordable & vintage can be too! • check out estatesales.net for local estate sales & do some fun digging, for vintage finds (this is where you get BIG deals on vintage clothing, especially rare vintage pieces) • not everything is always in our size, which can make us see what IS in our size - in new and creative ways • helps us break free of the ‘trend’ mindset & back into dressing for utility, expression, within our means & with purpose Did you know the second-hand fashion sector is growing exponentially faster, than the retail? I hope we can: - choose to buy quality second-hand - phase out the fast-fashion garments (both new & secondhand)…a long road that is already happening - continue to support companies creating new & eco-conscious garments - keep bringing more vintage to the forefront, from estate sales & more sources - get involved in making our own clothing (there are tons of rolls of organic/natural fabrics - both vintage and new, waiting to be used) - keep vigilant in green-washing techniques - find ways to be content with the clothing we already have, wear it in new ways
