@cnn: Ethiopia officially inaugurated Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam, a project that will provide energy to millions of Ethiopians while deepening a rift with downstream Egypt that has unsettled the region. #ethiopia #egypt #dam
Egypt is that neighbor who gets mad when you change YOUR Wi-Fi password.

There is no shortage of water for downstream countries. The Egypt concern is basically self reliance of Ethiopia.

Why is it every time I see a western media do a story about the GERD, they fail to mention that over 85% of the Nile originates from Ethiopia.

CNN making biased report. You didn't mention how many people live without access to electricity in Ethiopia, but telling us the life of Egypt depends on the river. No matter how western media want us to bow down, we completed the dam.

why is it ok for egypt, that’s already surrounded by water, to have a dam but ethiopia can’t when the nile starts there ?

It is not controversial. Egypt never consulted Ethiopia when they built their dams back in the days. In fact, they should have paid Ethiopia for using the Abay water for 1000 years.

the water origin is in Ethiopia so the country should have authority over the country

The fact that if it wasn't for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the downstream countries including Sudan and Egypt would be flooded and would witness great amount of damages makes it totally unfit to even be labeled as controversial. The projects and studies done around GERD show that the dam DOES NOT affect the downstream countries at all and Ethiopia is just utilizing it's own resources. May I add that 85% of the Nile river originates from Ethiopia. What you posted is just a narrative Egypt is trying to draw so that they can stop Ethiopians from reaching their full potential and quite frankly becoming better than them. IT REALLY WOULD BE A SHAME NOT TO EDUCATE THE WORLD ON THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH. Please do better CNN.
