My dad was Whirlpool's Director of Engineering in the 1990s. That is from the era when the engineers ran the company before the bean counters took over.

direct drives were the perfect washer. until they made the transmission planetary gear out of softer platic. they were super easy to work on and parts are still readily available for them. but the old design with the wig wag was way better more reliable. but much harder to work on

Not true on the side opening lid, we had a Kenmore that had a side opening lid growing up here in Texas, doubt it came from anywhere close to Canada.

i have a whirlpool direct drive from 1995. paid $75 for it 4 years ago and put agitator dogs in it. when it dies its get replaced with speed queen. i hate modern laundry

I have a Kenmore 80 series that came with my house. I have been replacing parts. I just replaced the transmission. This will last for another 30 years before I’m done.

The dual action agitator is The Best!!! I ditched my new Maytag bravos XL for an Amana by whirlpool and it has the dual action agitator...it's belt drive but does as good as the direct drive

Kenmore in the US had the side opening lid also. The kitchen aid versions of those was the best, they had a 1/4” of enamel paint that would never fail.
