It is an observational retrospective study that has a lot of issues not limited to inability to establish mechanism, not accounting for unmeasured confounding, sampling bias, and other issues. Nonetheless interesting.

Being in nursing school and also working at the hospital I always thought it was so weird that so many patients need the same exact surgery. It just feels like copy and paste. There’s gotta be some that don’t actually need those procedures.

the Einstellung is not linear and is often stronger in people who are more novice experts than people with a lot of experience. furthermore there are interventions and ways of giving feedback that can interrupt the effect, so what we're really talking about is cultures of hierarchy and no psychological safety from other staff.

So curious!! would love to see more recent data. "The study population consisted of Medicare beneficiaries 65 years or older who were admitted to the hospital between 2002 and 2011 with a primary diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure, or cardiac arrest." -- I'd be very curious to know if the data is the same now, 15-23years after this data was collected. I know that we do things differently, now, in our ICU because the data showed harm in the past.

these studies all have the same issue as ones that study outcomes during physician strikes. guess what happens to the sickest patients when the specialists aren't there to care for them? they get transferred out so your study population is now healthier
