Unlike dogs, horses don’t yelp or cry. When someone strings a dog up like DogDaddy, people know it’s wrong because the dogs cry and yelp and whimper. Horses are pretty stoic in comparison. It’s horrible that mistreatment of horses is so normal.

Your right and it attracts victims too. Horses are so therapeutic for abuse victims and so we have a world of abusers with a world of victims

Yes! And when these horses -especially babies - won’t succumb to the abuse, they end up with me because “they are too dangerous and untrainable” 🤦♀️Turns out some compassion and empathy turns them around - each single time. People are terrible.

Unfortunately all livestock in the food industry too, except pigs tend to be vocal but they’re “too vocal” and “dramatic” it’s not taken seriously

yes!! I feel like I was conditioned or groomed growing up to treat horses that way (ie. crops, spurs, etc) because that’s all I knew and now it makes me sick, not to mention how aggressive the coaches I had were growing up (screaming at the top of their lungs, riding ponies and punishing them knowing they are way to large for them to ride)

I was raised in very "old cowboy" type ways with horses. I was often uncomfortable with things i witnessed or was encouraged to do, but I didn't know better. I then took a 10 year break from horses and only got one again a little over a year ago. I've since had to do so much reconciliation within myself about how I want to approach horses and what training methods i use. it's been very eye opening.

I don’t think it’s just abuse towards horses but the people to people are abusive too. It’s such corrupt world to the horse and people.

I now exclusively train my own horse and don’t have any coaches or trainers- but I got made fun of by a person that was a coach (I never used her) for giving my horse a treat. She didn’t believe in such things and thought it was silly. I train my animals with positive reinforcement and my dogs have won tons of obedience competitions and my horse is phenomenally well behaved. Some people that claim to love horses seem to hate them and like seeing them miserable 😭

I think it's primarily because of how we're taught. we were literally taught to ignore pain signals and when asking questions like doesn't this hurt them, it's always no, they wouldn't do it if they were in pain. all these things are incorrect but we are conditioned to ignore it all. then it's also because horses are such incredibly accepting and forgiving animals!

It's also the fact that the horse world tends to attract traumatized people, the animal world in general. I worked in the industry since I was 12 and now in hindsight I can see the grooming tactics being deployed. The way people get trapped in an abusive cycle and then become abusers themselves.

Just because you treat your horse with respect, doesn't mean your training is invalid. Some horses need the positive reinforcement and some can use a more firm approach. They do not need to be beaten, or scared, for training to be effective. Patience and respect is what everyone needs and most lack

The amount of toxic abusive trainers is insane. I was traumatized by one 🥲 took tears to get back to normal.

It's so normalised and still taught this way....even people who claim to be non abusive still haven't got enough empathy because it's so normalised to be not empathic....usually under the guise of setting boundaries for safety. Unfortunately no one believes that there's other ways because there's so few people showing the alternatives and anyone that does gets buried in the algorithm or labelled as not having a clue so it's a vicious circle
