none of this is to say that I didn’t receive my “final” schedule until days before I went back to work and learned that my self contained wasn’t SETSS until I showed up to class. I got almost nothing I requested

First off...the self-contained is fine at 4, work with it like a small group instruction, and expect it to grow. The 12 or 15-to-One is a max ratio that districts push upward regularly. As for the literature, we're teachers, which means we live by the dual mottos of "beg, borrow, or steal" and "easier to ask for forgiveness than permission". Find a free epub and email it to the kids phones. If they have read-aloud, find a performance and have them follow along.

Hi, I have seen your content off and on sporadically for a few years now so I have no idea where you are located, but if you are in Oregon I may be in a position to help. And I must add that as someone who was a student with special needs you and all other SP-ED teachers are awesome simply for being willing to help people like us.

This is a very normal experience for special ed teachers. I was a student and we never had office hours, our teachers rarely had rooms or materials and were often left to fend for themselves. This is the special education system and it is really so wrong for the students and teachers. My middle school often had multiple SE classes running at once in the same room, sometimes upwards of 4 and 5. I can't imagine things are any better now than when this was my experience in the mid 00s, and I'm so sorry I can't offer any actual suggestions. My mom was a SE teacher at a different school and I often watched her pour her own money and resources into her classes or nothing got done

This is sad. I’m sorry you have to deal with this.

Hi! I’ve done middle school for 10 years. I feel like I should be able to give you advice here but it sounds like you’re handling this better than most educators I know ❤️at this point it sounds like you need to just keep showing up for the kids and taking it a day at a time. Find emotional supports outside of work!

I’m very honest and realistic with my kids, I often call myself “bad at my job” but it’s mostly a reminder that I’m still doing it, if I was bad I’d be fired. This year seems real rough for everyone and special Ed kids are often left in the dust. It sounds like you’re doing all you can while getting your ass kicked! The more you want to do the more the kids feel it, they’ll know, they’ll understand. You got this.
