Let’s talk about “Operation SAFE” 🙄 Many of us are upset about Operation SAFE because it seems like a “band-aid” solution. This “solution” offers people experiencing homelessness two options: get dropped off at a housing organization or go to jail. Wow. If you haven’t experienced homelessness or don’t know someone who has, here’s the reality: many of these housing organizations are already at full capacity, and or their resources are stretched very thin. I say this as someone who has personally helped a homeless veteran get several hotel rooms because many of these organizations were at capacity or simply didn’t have enough resources. Without getting any more emotional, let me get straight to the point: If you’re upset and angry about the SAFE initiative, here are a few things YOU can do to help those who will be affected by it: GO VOLUNTEER OR DONATE. There are several organizations that need volunteers and resources! Every Monday and Wednesday, First Love Fellowship holds church service at The @The Salvation Army USA in Downtown Tulsa and feeds those who attend. Volunteer to cook or serve a meal. The Merchant Tulsa is in need of men’s clothing. They’re open 9 a.m.–1 p.m., Tuesday–Friday. The @BeHeard Movement provides resources for those experiencing homelessness. You can sponsor one shower a month for just $10. The Tulsa Day Center community closet is completely empty. They’re in desperate need of men’s clothing and shoes. @Iron Gate Tulsa’s Cooking For A Cause event is happening Sept. 25. Ticket sales will directly help feed the hungry and homeless. Sometimes the helping hand someone needs is YOUR hand. #operationsafe #tulsa #governorstitt #tulsahomeless
