We spent 3 nights backpacking on a remote island on Lake Superior and had the BEST time! Isle Royale is one of the least visited national parks in the lower 48. Not only is it hard to get to, but it’s also completely closed during the winter. The season is short and you’ll need to reserve in advance, but it’s so worth it! How to Visit: ✈️ You can reach the island by either ferry or seaplane. And you can leave from Hougton, MI or Grand Marais/Grand Portage, MN. The ferries are cheaper, but they sell out faster and take a lot longer. We went for the seaplane. 💧You can arrive at two different sides of the island - Windigo or Rock Harbor. We opted for Rock Harbor because it has more to do. If you can only do a day trip, most people go to Windigo because it’s shorter to reach. ⛺ You can either camp, stay at the Rock Harbor Lodge or stay at cabins on either side of the island. 🎫 If you opt to camp like us, the campsites are first come, first serve. And you don’t need to make a reservation - you just need to fill out a free permit when you arrive. More to Know: ♻️ This island is remote and so beautiful. Make sure to pack out ALL your trash, don’t trample the vegetation and keep your distance from wildlife! Please do your part. 🦊Tons of moose live here! We only saw one on a trail (so cool but a little scary). Other people we talked to saw several! We also saw a beaver, a black fox and several snakes. 🐺 Wolves also live on the island but are rare to see. 🍴Rock Harbor has two restaurants, a camp store, a visitor center and they offer boat tours and kayak rentals.
