For me, the reason The Dark Knight trilogy is the best representation and iteration of Batman, and is ultimately the best Batman is not because of how great Christopher Nolan is or how great Christian Bale is and of course Heath. Or how they were able to execute and tell the common elements in the Batman story. Obviously that’s all part of it. But to me it’s the way the movies were able to display the tragedy of Bruce and how his life as Batman led him through his life and the choices he ultimately made. That story reminds us that when we go through hardships like losing parents, we have two paths we can choose to go down. We can choose to be like Gotham’s villains and let ourselves be consumed and controlled by anger, pain and heartbreak. Or as Alfred said, we can make the choice that no one else can make…the right choice. The choice to embrace everything, to choose to grow, to learn and to heal within. In the end we can use our experiences good or bad to shape ourselves into a symbol of hope not necessarily for everyone else but for ourselves, a representation that we can overcome anything. When we choose to be that symbol we can learn to live and overcome our fears, pain and suffering. We can take the fall for someone else’s wrong doings so that others who may be in harms way may be saved and remain hopeful and have something to believe in. And lastly we can be the one who puts an end to people’s suffering and oppression after we have learned what it means to live in defeat and how to rise from it and come back even stronger. “A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulders to let him know the world hadn’t ended.“
