This can cause symptoms like flushing, rashes, swelling, stomach problems, headaches, brain fog, and even allergic-type reactions without a clear trigger. Research shows that MCAS and other mast cell disorders are far more common in autistic people than in the general population. While estimates vary, studies suggest that up to 15–20% of autistic individuals may have MCAS or significant mast-cell dysregulation, compared to less than 1–2% in the general population. This helps explain why many autistic people struggle with chronic allergies, food sensitivities, unexplained rashes, or systemic inflammation. Understanding MCAS in autism is important because it shows the overlap between the immune system and the nervous system. For many, unusual sleep needs, histamine intolerance, gut problems, and sensory sensitivities may actually tie back to mast cell over-activation.
